Cuomo introduces new policy to combat sex violence at SUNY

http://nypost.com/2014/10/02/cuomo-introduces-new-policy-to-combat-sex-violence-at-suny/

Cuomo's new policy in colleges and university can attract the young voting population to vote for him. Cuomo has put a sex-assault prevention policy in many SUNYs. In order for another person to engage in sexual activities with another person, consent must be clear and voluntary. However, this consent must be asked for any form. This policy is being pushed into private universities as well because many women are victim of sexual assault. However, this policy is obviously flawed because no person asks permission to sexually assault someone. Sexual assault is forcing to have sex and the policy clearly will not help anybody. However, this policy can be considered just a tactic and strategy in the upcoming election to help Cuomo attract the youth majority in SUNYs that will be voting for their governor. This policy will not only "help" victims but will help Cuomo as well.

Why Is The Cuomo Administration Automatically Deleting State Employees' Emails?

Last year, New York State started deleting some of its state employees’ emails - those older than 90 days which the users had not specifically saved. This is a much more aggressive policy than most other states have. The state’s defense was that the automatic deletion of emails was to cut down on the state’s “enormous amount of email data”. However, the state uses a version of Microsoft’s Office 365 which offers 50 GB per user and unlimited email archiving, which makes these deletion measures unnecessary. Furthermore, plenty of other states, including Florida, Connecticut, and Washington actually require state employees to save certain emails for a certain number of years. New York’s aggressive deletion of state employees’ emails make you wonder: Is the state trying to hide something or not?

NRA not giving Astorino campaign money despite anger at Cuomo's NY Safe Act

The National Rifle Association has barely donated any money from their $18 million fund to help the Astorino campaign win. This is extremely surprising because he is fighting for more lenient gun laws, and he is also against Cuomo's Safe Act. The Astorino campaign has managed to raise only $5 million, and 10% of that money is from Astorino's own pocket. This is barely anything when compared to Governor Cuomo's campaign, which raised $12 million, and it still has access to another $24 million. This difference in the funds of each campaign is not small, and due to this difference the Astorino campaign really needs support from the National Rifle Association.

According to Robert Spitzer, a gun policy and political science expert at SUNY Cortland, the NRA does not want to fund the Astorino campaign because they want to maximize their spending on close races where their money might actually make a difference. According to the polls New Yorkers like the Safe Act so even if the NRA helped Astorino to fight the Safe Act their fight would be abortive because New Yorkers like the law. However, there are some people in New York that are still against the Safe Act and the Astorino campaign is reaching out to these people through many gun organizations and requesting them to vote for him on election day.

Gov. Rick Perry Campaigns at Running Shoe Store with Rob Astorino
In my opinion, this article exemplifies candidates of the same party standing together. Here Rick Perry, Republican Governor of Texas, shows his support for Rob Astorino by doing events with him and throwing fundraisers with him. Rick Perry also criticizes Governor Christie for not supporting Astorino and siding with Andrew Cuomo. To defend himself Christie says that he won't support someone who is ahead in the election by 35 points. I think it is strange that Christie would rather support a Democrat than a Republican despite the fact that the Republican is ahead in the election.

Cuomo Rallies for Women's Issues

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/10/05/nyregion/at-cuomo-campaign-rallies-a-focus-on-womens-issues.html?ref=politics

Governor Cuomo with his running mate Kathy Hochul rallied in Albany on Saturday with the focus on women's rights. During this rally he brings up issues like pay equity, abortion rights, human trafficking, sexual harassment and domestic violence. He says “I am not going to leave this earth until this state makes the statement that my three daughters are equal to any three boys anywhere.” Cuomo also raises up that his opponent, Rob Astorino, is against abortion. However, Astorino raised the issue of Cuomo overlooking Sheldon Silver's complaints of sexual harassment in Albany. Astorino says “It’s ironic that Andrew Cuomo is going around the state on a bus tour when he should have been leading Sheldon Silver to prosecutors for covering up sex crimes in the Assembly,” Mr. Astorino said in an interview on Friday. “When Sheldon Silver needed a lifeline, the one person that threw it to him was Andrew Cuomo.”
Is this rally just a ploy to distract voters from more pressing issues?

Velázquez: de Blasio Administration ‘On Notice’ Over Police Brutality

Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez gave a speech at a town hall on police abuse Thursday night in Brooklyn's Sunset Park, where there were police officials, local officials and residents. She warned that Police Commissioner Bill Bratton and Mayor de Blasio alter the NYPD practices in her district.

People are pissed off after officers were videotaped apparently knocking a pregnant woman to the ground since she was interfering with an arrest. The officers then kneeled on her back. Ms. Velazquez began to speak up amidst a cacophony of insults hurled to the police officers and asking Bratton to resign.

Ms. Velazquez expressed her discontent about the excessive force used upon Hispanics in the 72nd District many times during the years, and demanding the de Blasio administration make effort to change the behavior of the police department.

Elected officials at this gathering were disappointed about Bill Bratton's absence, such as Jesse Hamilton, who had recently won the Democratic primary to become the state senator for this district. Hamilton believed that Bratton should have come to this event to show his interest to benefit the community and agree to this change.

In the police force, Chief of Department Philip Banks III noted that the NYPD would heed these complaints, and make an effort to change their policies.

I think that Nydia Velazquez is doing her job well to protect her community. Sometimes, the police exercises too much force over the public, and this must be stopped.
