Last year, New York State started deleting some of its state
employees’ emails - those older than 90 days which the users had not specifically
saved. This is a much more aggressive policy than most other states have. The
state’s defense was that the automatic deletion of emails was to cut down on
the state’s “enormous amount of email data”. However, the state uses a version
of Microsoft’s Office 365 which offers 50 GB per user and unlimited email
archiving, which makes these deletion measures unnecessary. Furthermore, plenty
of other states, including Florida, Connecticut, and Washington actually require
state employees to save certain emails for a certain number of years. New York’s
aggressive deletion of state employees’ emails make you wonder: Is the state
trying to hide something or not?

This does seem too excessive. I personally let many important emails rot in my inbox for months at a time, so this policy would hurt people like me. Cuomo is already under fire for leading a corrupt state government, so I don't understand why he would do this. This is something that Astorino and Moss will probably bring up in future debates and negative ads.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Rebecca. If the states have unlimited email archiving why delete the emails especially since 90 days isnt so long? I also think that this is something that shouldn't be looked at too deeply. There are more compelling issues then email deletion that Astorino and Moss can bring up.
ReplyDeleteI don't understand why the emails have to be deleted after 90 days. This is an absurd policy that will only hurt him in the election if this topic is brought up.
ReplyDeleteI'm with Hila. There are bigger issues that need to be focused on rather than state employees clearing their inboxes.
ReplyDeleteIt really does make you wonder if the state is hiding something because it seems ridiculous that they would delete emails after 90 days. What happens if somebody forgets to specifically save an important email? This can cause more problems than it solves
