Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez gave a speech at a town hall on police abuse Thursday night in Brooklyn's Sunset Park, where there were police officials, local officials and residents. She warned that Police Commissioner Bill Bratton and Mayor de Blasio alter the NYPD practices in her district.
People are pissed off after officers were videotaped apparently knocking a pregnant woman to the ground since she was interfering with an arrest. The officers then kneeled on her back. Ms. Velazquez began to speak up amidst a cacophony of insults hurled to the police officers and asking Bratton to resign.
Ms. Velazquez expressed her discontent about the excessive force used upon Hispanics in the 72nd District many times during the years, and demanding the de Blasio administration make effort to change the behavior of the police department.
Elected officials at this gathering were disappointed about Bill Bratton's absence, such as Jesse Hamilton, who had recently won the Democratic primary to become the state senator for this district. Hamilton believed that Bratton should have come to this event to show his interest to benefit the community and agree to this change.
In the police force, Chief of Department Philip Banks III noted that the NYPD would heed these complaints, and make an effort to change their policies.
I think that Nydia Velazquez is doing her job well to protect her community. Sometimes, the police exercises too much force over the public, and this must be stopped.

I agree that the police use too much force over the public and I think that Nydia Velazquez should continue to fight to protect her community because that is what will get her elected.
ReplyDeleteNydia Velazquez will definitely get public support from this because the issue of the NYPD using force is on a rise. Many incidents like this have taken place which include the pregnant women being hit by policemen and the death of a man in Staten Island. This is will get Nydia Velasquez re-elected if she helps the public.
