Gov. Rick Perry Campaigns at Running Shoe Store with Rob Astorino
In my opinion, this article exemplifies candidates of the same party standing together. Here Rick Perry, Republican Governor of Texas, shows his support for Rob Astorino by doing events with him and throwing fundraisers with him. Rick Perry also criticizes Governor Christie for not supporting Astorino and siding with Andrew Cuomo. To defend himself Christie says that he won't support someone who is ahead in the election by 35 points. I think it is strange that Christie would rather support a Democrat than a Republican despite the fact that the Republican is ahead in the election.

"Christie, who enjoys a close relationship with Gov. Andrew Cuomo, has said he supports Astorino but as head of the Republican Governors Assocation he refuses to spend the organization's money on a race where the Republican candidate trails by 35 points."
ReplyDeleteThis speaks volumes that Republican Governor Chris Christie is reaching across the aisle to maintain a close relationship with Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo. This type of relationship can appeal to the voters who have become disillusioned with politics because of the increasing political polarization and gridlock. Despite the fact that Governor Christie is the Chair of the Republican Governors Association, he does make a point that he shouldn't be wasting money on a candidate that is losing by 35 points. Since New York is traditionally a Blue (Democratic) state, it takes a lot more than a load of money to help get a Republican elected to office. Astorino doesn't seem like a strong candidate to me because his platform simply doesn't include the appeal to women's rights, which is very alarming.
I think that by campaigning with Rick Perry, Astorino is shooting himself in the foot. He should know by now that New York is a very liberal state, and even more conservative citizens have no love for the Tea Party brand of conservatism Rick Perry preaches. I fail to see how bringing in someone from outside the state will have a positive impact on his chances of election. He's basing his whole campaign on the idea of being an underdog, yet he has the resources to bring in a former presidential candidate to support him. This distances him from the citizens of New York, his constituents.
