Analyzing Governor Cuomo and Governor Christie's Partnership

On September 26th, the Wall Street Journal published an article concerning the partnership of Governor Cuomo and Governor Christie. According to the article, the tow governors have been friends for a long time and think highly of each other. This positive relationship obviously helps with running agencies that New York and New Jersey share such as the NY-NJ Port Authority. The article also states that both governors have been under fire from both of their parties because they work with the other party too much. Governor Christie is the chairman of the Republican Governors Association. After quick research, one of the goals of the association is to help elect republican governors in different states. What I found interesting is that Governor Christie has decided to not endorse the republican candidate Rob Asterino for NY State governor despite him being the chairman of the RGA. So my question is, how would the lack of endorsement from Governor Christie weaken Asterino's stance against Governor Cuomo?

  1. Their friendship is pretty interesting considering that these two politicians are very dissimilar to each other. Cuomo is a democratic centrist in a liberal state while Christie is a republican. Christie also declined to endorse Republican Rob Asterino. I think governor Christie believes that Cuomo will ultimately win reelection this November and wants to continue their positive relations.

  2. It seems to me that Cuomo and Christie are suddenly friends because they both believe the other is going to win but they are both risking supporting one another. They have experienced criticism from each of their political parties because of working too much with the opposite political party.

  3. I believe that their friendship is more based on self interest than actually friendship. Both governors understand that they they can influence each others elections and if they unite and show their alliance, they can get people to vote for them. And since both have been governors, they can express the great relationship between these two states and acknowledge each other's accomplishments.

  4. This friendship goes to show that it is possible for members of opposing parties to reach across the aisle. This can pose as a good thing to voters just because people are becoming more disillusioned with our country's government because of the increasing political polarization.

  5. It is refreshing to see politicians working across party lines. The system does not work I there is no discussion. People have to not simply say I will not work or vote with you because you are from the other party. They both have to argue their point and come to an agreement somewhere in the middle where each side losses and gains something.
