In this Daily
News article, opponent Rob Asterino charges Governor Cuomo with receiving a
large sum of money from companies who have received a combined $7.2 billion in
state contracts (Lovett & Blain). This “pay- to -play culture” as the article explains is a
perfect example of the Marxist view of how those who control the economy have
the power. We should take money out of the equation and focus on what the
candidates do to help our community. The candidates who have the most money are
the ones who influence the most voters and win. It seems that this limits
us from picking the right candidate for the right reasons. Do you think that
candidates should have an equal budget for their campaign or should they be
able to receive money from supporters?
The practice of large corporations giving money to candidates is gross, but I don't see how we can stop it. If any government creates a law mandating equal campaign funds for all candidates, you can always expect someone to cry "Communist!" The practice should be regulated, but I don't think it can be eradicated any time soon.
ReplyDeleteI am afraid that for an elected official they need adequate resources (aka money), so in the end, the official with the most money will have the most power, but they same authority as another official with less money. It is impossible to get anything done without paying for it and voters know that, that is why they are usually influenced by the richer candidate.
ReplyDeleteI really wish ordinary people had more power in the world of politics, instead those with fat wallets and large sums in their bank accounts. This confirms the Marxist view of government; that those who control the economy and money, control the power. In today's world, money really does seem to equal power.
ReplyDeleteThis just goes along with class view theory (one of the 4 elitist theories). This shows that the people with the money have the ability to influence the government because they can help get official elected and then those officials would have to pass laws that benefit the people who helped the officials get elected. This is also sad because it should that without much money it is very hard for any candidate to win, so the monetary backing is a necessity and this is bad because this monetary support can cause elected officials to help the wrong people in certain cases.
ReplyDeleteThe danger of these donations is that they may influence the candidate to make decisions to please their donors. But if the government tried to impose equal budgets for candidates’ campaigns, it would meet huge opposition, so that would be impossible.
