Astorino says high taxes are largely governor’s fault

This article discussed the taxes in Westchester County, and who was to blame for the high taxes that the locals are paying. Rob Astorino mentions that the county taxes that the Governor is paying decreased while the rest of the taxes that other people must pay increased. For example, the property tax increased to $20,516.67 from $19,293.98 in 2011 and the town tax increased to $2,7772.55 from $2,521.19 in 2011.
Astorino also discussed that the Governor should not be slamming Westchester for its high taxes because it is his fault that he could not eliminate unnecessary and unfunded state mandates. Astorino also claims that he helped to lower the property taxes, which is contradicting Cuomo's claim that he raised them. The article also stated that Cuomo pushed for a law that imposes a cap on local property taxes, but he did not follow through on helping localities on helping to cut costs. Cuomo's campaign responded saying that Astorino should not try to justify that he is curbing taxes when Westchester is paying the highest property taxes in the nation.

  1. The Republican special interest groups, especially the Real Estate Board of New York, will probably use this article to promote their party's candidates. What we can do to counter (even though none of our groups are concerned with taxes and property) is repeat the fact that Westchester has the highest property taxes in the nation and mention how Republicans are always talking about cutting taxes for the wealthy and businesses, whereas Cuomo actually cut taxes for middle-class and lower-income families. (Constituents Republicans tend to only pay lip service to, or ignore entirely)

  2. Based on this article, Astorino is obsessing too much over the fact that Cuomo is paying a lower county property tax. Honestly, he should rather deal with the fact that his own county has the highest property tax in the COUNTRY, and obviously covering this up by saying he actually lowered taxes.

  3. Why get involved with each other's personal taxes? Can these candidates just focus on their campaigns to further improve the territories they are running for? If any candidate would like to seem like they care about their position, they would spend time expressing their concerns, not bashing other candidates.

  4. Even though staying away from mudslinging would be the honorable thing to do, it is something that I think all candidates eventually resort to. If it is done tastefully you can still leave the campaign without creating any enemies. It seems to me that Rob Astorino is simply informing the people of Cuomo's lies and deceitful actions. Why should Astorino be quiet when Cuomo is spreading lies about his campaign.
