Governor Andrew Cuomo made a trip to Afghanistan today on Septemeber 27, 2014. Now the question is why would Cuomo go to Afghanistan. He is the governor who is charge of the state and not political matters among the country. Well, Cuomo says that he is "motivated" by the presence of the Islamic state. He believes that he should join this issue in order to control the terrorist threat that is clearly present in New York. Recently, on Thursday, September 25, 2014, Iraqi prime minister revealed an alleged plot to bomb the subway system in the United States and France. Was this the main reason of Cuomo's visit to Afghanistan? Well the elections are not far from today. In about a month and a week, New York will have to vote for their new governor and Cuomo's surprise visit to Afghanistan may gain him more popularity against Astorino by ensuring New York and helping to fight terrorism against New York which is a tremendous topic at the time. By meeting with delegates in Afghanistan and National Guard members of the state, Cuomo shows his loyalty to New York by showing his hardwork as a governor towards New York. But the question is, will this help him in the election?
I think this trip will hurt him in the election, both in real life and in the simulation. Republicans are going to slam him for taking trips so far outside of his constituency and for preparing for a potential presidential race in two years instead of focusing on New York. I personally do not understand how him going to Afghanistan will help stop ISIS from attacking our subways or whatever excuse his camp gave the media. We can use that excuse if anyone asks us about his trip during a classroom trip, but I don't know how many people would buy it.
ReplyDeleteIs Cuomo seriously trying to deal with global affairs that only the federal government should actually deal with? I can see this fuels speculation that he will run for president when he's doing things that a president should be doing. Honestly, though, I think he's being a good and responsible leader. He's dealing with dangerous matters that are right now scaring New Yorkers. If the people see it in this way, I believe this will help Cuomo in his election.
ReplyDeleteWhat is Cuomo doing? Let the federal government focus on foreign affairs and the the state government with its own issues. Sorry Mr. Cuomo, but your "motivation" is in the wrong direction. Shouldn't Cuomo have enough "motivation" in New York State?
ReplyDeleteThis trip was a risky decision for Cuomo because the topic of foreign affairs in the Middle East is still a huge controversy among Americans, especially New Yorkers. I believe that this was not necessary at this point in time because he should have been focused on trying to get reelected for governor before he focuses on America as a whole. I could why this is seen as a sign of his desire to run for presidential elections.
ReplyDeleteAs I have seen in other articles, Cuomo is currently ahead by 25 points so this is a risky move, but I think he could take it. Plus the Secretary of Defense wanted Cuomo to come so it's not like he decided to go on his own because he felt like it. As for terrorism, ISIS is not the only threat. It may be the biggest threat right now, but there are other extremist groups out there. He is being briefed by military personnel and the Secretary of Defense himself. I'm sure he is getting a lot more information about terrorism threats to New York (especially since we are a primary target) than he would sitting around here.
ReplyDeleteI think Cuomo made a mistake by going to Afghanistan at the moment. He should be more focused on getting reelected than ISIS. ISIS is a huge issue affecting America, not New York only, and because it is affecting the whole country the New York state governor should not be the one addressing this issue. Cuomo should actually be quite far from this issue because it does not require solely his attention, he is a different set of public affairs that he has to worry about.
