When it comes to accomplishments in his first term, Andrew Cuomo certainly has something to boast about, and he has. Legalizing gay marriage, reducing the state deficit, and passing stricter gun control laws are among these accomplishments. However, this article brings up the things Cuomo has failed to do. Cuomo set out to replace the Tappan Zee bridge, without a source of funds to do so. He has yet to make a decision regarding fracking. It also seems as if he doesn't care about the upcoming election, with a significantly lower amount of campaigning than his challenger, Astorino.
I agree that it is important to also focus on what Cuomo has failed to do in his first term as governor, rather than just his accomplishments. As voters, we must be informed and know the whole story of every candidate. That requires knowing what the individual is capable of doing and what he/she hasn't done.
It is true that voters need to know the whole story but, the truth is that the candidates will distract the shortcomings with their accomplishments. But, voters vote based on what they care about and they still care about gun control, and abortion rights. Cuomo supports strict gun control and pushes for abortion rights. Astorino wants to repeal the Safe Act that Cuomo has put in place. Most New Yorkers are in favor of the Safe Act so I would think Astorino was unpopular from the start and Cuomo is feeling comfortable with his lead.
ReplyDeleteIt seems like Cuomo’s accomplishments in his first term made him a little too confident. He probably feels comfortable in his lead over Astorino because of his accomplishments and the fact that he is the incumbent. However, I also think that voters need to look at what Cuomo hasn’t accomplished as well as what he has, and pay attention to his most recent actions; just because a governor has done well in the past doesn’t mean he will do as well in the future.
ReplyDeleteI agree that it's important to know the full story before judging completely and I believe that Cuomo is doing well at his job as governor. His lack of campaigning may be due to his focus in his work instead of distracting himself with being re-elected, especially with a huge lead. He has time to continue his work and make sure that if re-elected he has a successful second term.
