Governor Cuomo released an ad supporting his Equal Rights Agenda featuring his three daughters and girlfriend. The ad was introduced at a Woman's Equality Party rally in Manhattan, where Governor Cuomo and former New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn spoke. Both denounced Cuomo's opponent Rob Astorino, one of the most conservative politicians in New York state, for opposing a woman's right to choose and accused him of fighting to make abortion illegal. It is unlikely that Astorino will win this race because most conservative New Yorkers are much more liberal than he is. Astorino is not giving up and took a few shots at Cuomo, accusing him of hypocrisy due to his handling of the Vito Lopez case. Astorino claims that it is not right for Cuomo to continue supporting Sheldon Silver, who helped silence victims of Lopez's sexual harassment, while pushing his agenda which includes a plank against workplace harassment. While this is a valid point, Astorino can hardly consider himself to be an advocate of women considering he is anti-choice even in circumstances of rape or when abortion would save a woman's life.

ReplyDeleteNot only is it right for Cuomo to support women's rights, but it strategically smart as well. As we learned in class, New York is mostly liberal which means that Astorino's views will not taken well by the community. Although I agree that Cuomo should not continue supporting Sheldon Silver, compared to Astorino, Cuomo is willing to do a lot more for women's rights.
ReplyDeleteAccording to articles dealing with the Cuomo and Sheldon Silver's sly cover ups, Cuomo was also said to be tired of Silver's antics, not just with the Albany scandal, but everything else in general. He planned on ousting Silver from his position as Assembly Speaker. So I don't think he was necessarily for Silver in his actions about the Vito Lopez case.
ReplyDeleteAt least Cuomo acknowledges that women make up at least half the voting population in the state, whereas Astorino is still stubborn in his views. It's almost a given that Cuomo will win the female vote in this election if Astorino doesn't make an effort to appeal to women between now and Election Day.
ReplyDeleteWomen's rights has become such a big topic in current elections. I don't understand how Astorino believes he even has a chance as winning if he doesn't address the issue at hand. Like Karen said, at least half of the voters are female. They will likely vote for Cuomo because he at least tries to address the feminist cause.
