A major part of Andrew Cuomo's platform is his Women's Equality Act, which failed in the State Senate because of an abortion rights plank. He is promising that he will push it through if reelected, and has gone on a bus tour upstate with his running mate and other women's rights advocates to promote it. This article was interesting to me because we New Yorkers rarely pay attention to what goes on in upstate politics even though their representatives can have a huge influence on the funding we receive from the state and other legislation. The article also mentioned that Rob Astorino has campaigned with Rick Perry, the ultraconservative Texas governor famous for shuttering abortion clinics and allowing only seven to operate in the entire state of Texas. All of the liberal special interest groups, especially Planned Parenthood and the 1199 SEIU, can try to include this fact in our ads to stop him from getting elected.

I honestly think that if we continue to highlight that Cuomo supports women's rights and that Astorino is adamantly against women's reproductive rights, Cuomo has a very good chance of winning in this Election Simulation given that 71% of our school is made up of girls. On the other hand, if Cuomo continues to campaign for Women's rights in the actual election, the women can get him reelected. However, it is also a matter of getting them out to vote on Election Day!
ReplyDeleteThe State Senate and Astorino need to stop looking at abortion as a negative. Abortion is good as it allows a women to decide whether she wants to be pregnant. What if a women was raped, and accidentally got pregnant? No one would want her pregnant with a stranger's baby. The majority of men in the Senate should think about the women's point of view, and understand that preventing abortion will not only ruin the mother's life, but also the child's life.
ReplyDeleteThis will probably be a major part of this election because this is a bill that Cuomo publicized and really tried to get passed. This bill will also be very important to Women's rights activists everywhere, and if the Governor can just meet with these people and talk to them, he can most likely gain their support in his fight. Also in New York state there are many cases of rape, and a lot of women who become pregnant due to rape want an abortion. This will become an issue if Astorino is elected because he will fight to shut down many abortion clinics, so the Governor can probably appeal to these people to help him win and keep the abortion clinics open.
ReplyDeleteI think that its great that Cuomo is determined to get this bill passed. I don't get why anyone would be opposed to women's rights. Women should have the right to do what they want with their bodies. Its their bodies, not the lawmakers'. Rape is a legitimate reason as to why a woman would want an abortion. Another could be that the parent isn't ready for a child or she doesn't have the resources necessary to take care of one. Medical reasons also can call for an abortion. The bottom line is, it shouldn't be up to lawmakers to decide what a woman has to do if she is expecting.
