Cuomo mandates for SUNY to fix their rules regarding sexual assault

This past Thursday, Governor Cuomo gave a press conference in Manhattan in which he said SUNY has 60 days to change their rules regarding sexual assault on campus. He has mandated that they must work at preventing, investigating, and prosecuting the cases. Cuomo hopes that by doing so, eventually there will be a statewide law regulating sexual assault policies in both state and private universities. Currently, most SUNY schools have policies of affirmative consent but in varying degrees. Consent is when both parties must agree to each act, and they must be in the right health to make the judgement. I think this is a major step forward for New York State to stand up with victims of sexual assault cases. With this change to the policies, victims can now go to police and campus security to report the assault, even if the victim was drinking and is underage. I believe that this change will help re-elect Governor Cuomo in the November elections because it stands out to parents and young voters as an approach in the right direction for NY.

  1. This seems like a very serious issue and It is important that the governor be involved in situations like this. By mandating changes to SUNY campuses regarding sexual assault, students should feel more sage and open to reporting such violence.

  2. I feel that this is a step in the right direction. Sexual assault is a very serious issue and the fact that the governor is getting involved is pretty reassuring. Although, the problem won't disappear entirely, I hope the number of sexual assault cases do being to diminish in universities and colleges.

  3. As to what Daniel and Paula said I too believe that sexual assault is a very serious issue and Governor Cuomo's mandate shows that he is taking steps to help victims who were sexually assaulted but who are underaged and drinking to report their assault to the police without being scared of getting in trouble.

  4. Cuomo has indeed made a correct step in correcting sexual assault issues in New York. In a previous article, Rob Astorino criticized's Cuomo's rally for women's rights with Kathy Hochul pointing out that he covered a sexual assault scandal in Albany. This proves that he makes a correct step in handling issues like these.
