Cuomo Uses Social Issues Against Astorino

Cuomo has been using Astorino’s views on social issues, such as abortion and same-sex marriage, against him, with TV ads that portray Astorino as “ultraconservative”. Astorino is pro-life and against same-sex marriage, although he says that he won’t try to limit abortion rights or overturn NY’s same-sex marriage law that Cuomo signed in 2011. Cuomo, on the other hand, is actively supporting women, and has taken bus tours to promote his Women’s Equality Act. Due to these efforts, Cuomo’s lead over Astorino is 59 percent to 22 percent among women, according to a poll taken in late September. Astorino has accused Cuomo of focusing on abortion just to get the votes. However, the fact remains that Astorino is Republican in a state with much more Democrats than Republicans, and his pro-life view is working against him.

  1. In terms of elections, it appears that not only are a politician's legal positions in social issues important, but their personal views are also significant.

  2. Obviously, I think the lead accounts much for the fact that Cuomo has shares social ideas with the women of New York as he has three daughters himself and can relate to the idea of women being treated equally and respectfully; an issue vital here in NYC. Astorino can accuse Cuomo all he wants- the fact is he is losing and by a lot with women.

  3. I agree with Stanley because Astorino is really losing voters due to his conservative beliefs in a liberal state and as much as he accuses Cuomo of focusing too much on abortion, he's still losing voters to him.

  4. Astorino seems to be hiding his personal views and mudslinging at Cuomo throughout his campaign.

  5. I honestly do not think that Astorino has much of a chance against Governor Andrew Cuomo on topics like abortion. This is because Astorino is a republican candidate who is prolife, but he needs to understand that he is in a democratic state and most people here are prochoice. I think that Governor Andrew Cuomo is doing a great job by focusing on topics like this because these are the weakest parts of Astorino's campaign.
