In the wake of the Newtown school shooting, Governor Cuomo passed the toughest gun control law in the nation. However, this law has gotten many people in upstate NY angry and the law seems to be a key issue upstate. Despite this, most New Yorkers approve of Cuomo's gun control law and Cuomo considers it a great achievement. The people who oppose the act are very active but they are few in number. Although they vow to vote against Cuomo on Election Day, I don't think it will have a huge effect on his lead over Republican candidate Rob Astorino.

I hope not either, as I believe the SAFE Act will crack down on all those who hold illegally obtained guns and will also deteriorate the amount of crimes which occur daily. Although the process might not be sudden, the initiative and the law itself might scare people into obeying it.
ReplyDeleteAs much as you try to ban guns in certain areas, the more you restrain average citizens. To say it bluntly, criminals don't care if their is a law or not, they have certain intentions and will obtain weapons one way or another. I agree that average citizens should not be at fault for something criminals will overlook anyway.
ReplyDeleteI think that strict gun laws are necessary in order to prevent serious crimes. So, I agree with Cuomo's legislation. If the government regulates guns more closely, the chances of gun-related violence will likely drop.
ReplyDeleteIt's been proven that stricter gun laws have reduced homicide and suicide rates: New York City has some of the strictest laws in the country, for you cannot even own a fake gun that looks in any way similar to a real one without having a license to use it for theatrical purposes or the like. Murder rates in NYC have gone down exponentially since these laws were enacted. To say that there shouldn't be stricter gun laws because criminals will overlook them is like saying there shouldn't be laws against murder and pedophilia because criminals will overlook those, too. I am in full support of Cuomo's actions!
ReplyDeleteIn my article of Cuomo's memoir, it references this choice of gun control. It says "Recounting his push for strict gun laws after the mass shooting in Newtown, Conn., in 2012, he recalls an aide noting his high approval rating and saying, 'Are you sure you want to mess with that?'". So i think that it's safe to say that this was very much approved among the public (but of course different people will be vehemently opposed it). As for myself, I am with the supporters and my classmates above. The amount of gun-related massacres in the US is uncanny. With restrictions like these, it makes the likelihood of those events minimal.
